When the App starts, it does read a device identifier from your machine. To validate any purchases, the App checks this identifier against the one in the App Store receipt that was created by Apple when you downloaded the App. After this check, the App deletes the identifier from its memory.

Any preferences you set when you use the App are stored in the preference system of macOS.
